A few days ago I was listening to ‘ I will exalt you’ and I started getting emotional. I started to reflect and think about the past year and even the whole decade. As I was listening to the song I found myself repeating ‘I will exalt you Lord, I will exalt you, Lord’. Some may ask why I was repeating this phrase. There are two reasons. One…When you repeat something you are more likely to remember it. Two…It was a friendly reminder to myself that I have to exalt God in every part of my life.
I don’t know about you but this year has been full of ups and downs. I prayed about things and saw it come to pass but I also prayed about things and I didn’t see it come to pass. There was a particular situation that really shocked me and caused me to be upset, confused, heartbroken, etc. … and basically doubt who God is. But what I learnt through it was even through heartbreak, confusion and pain God still deserves to be praised and exalted. God is still good even when we don’t feel like it.
Some of you may have had a great year and I am happy for you and I pray next year is even better. But I know some of you would have had a difficult year and this is for you. Someone in your family may have died, you may have lost your job, you may have regretted a decision and now you have to live with the consequences potentially forever … whatever it is find a few or many things to thank God for. In 1 Chronicles 16: 34 it says ‘Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever. In 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 it says “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
Some of you may be reading this and may not even believe in God or you used to but because of the things you have faced, you have turned away from God. You might even say with the year or decade I have had I don’t believe there is a God. To be honest, I don’t have all the answers to your questions. I don’t know why you went through what you did this. But I do know someone greater than me who has the answers and who can give you peace and joy. Jesus Christ. It says in the bible ‘May the Lord of peace himself, give up his peace at all times and in every situation’. I have experienced this peace and you can have it too, if you are willing to accept him into your life.
I will exalt you
No matter what I go through
Even when life is not full of ease
You remain my Prince of Peace
The one I can lean on
The one I put my trust upon
